The album spawned five singles: ' Would?', ' Them Bones', ' Angry Chair', ' Rooster', and ' Down in a Hole', all with accompanying music videos. It was the band's last album recorded with all four original members, as bassist Mike Starr was fired in January 1993 during the tour to support the album. It has since been certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA, making Dirt the band's highest selling album to date. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, the album received critical acclaim and is considered a classic in the grunge genre. I think it was a dark period in the bands collective existence and it was strained (Jerry, Layne, Sean all have gone on record about their issues) but as you mentioned they recorded 2 new songs and Jerry was on record saying as long as all the band members were alive the potential for more music was there.Dirt is the second studio album by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on September 29, 1992, through Columbia Records. I personally don't think that this song marked the end of AIC. Looking back now on what we know transpired 25+ years ago their are other perspectives.

The beauty of Alice in Chains is the ambiguity of the lyrics can be interpreted by 100 different people in 100 different ways. I took the song from that time probably through my mid to late 20s as a relationship deteriorating (either friendship or love) and applied that song's lyrics to my own personal life. It never occurred to me that it was about the band's internal struggles and breaking up. I wasn't aware of Layne's issues but remember hearing the song a lot in the summer of 96. I was certainly a fan but not totally emotionally mature to think of the song other than the initial way I felt/interpreted it when I heard it. I was a kid when Tripod was released - I think I was 13/14.
